Soliloquy Thorin - Portrait of Thorin Oakenshield

By David Taehee Lee

Long ago, in days of yore
I was the Young Dwarf prince of Erebor
Ever prosper under Lonely Mountain might
Mines of gold, and gems glisten under moonlight
The forge was hot, it ever shone bright
Meat and ale, laughter ever rang in the halls
Long live Thror, King Under the Mountain!
But delved too deep into the Earth, we did
The Arkenstone, clear as the heavens
Drove the king mad with greed
Was it not enough, O grandfather?
And lo, the dragon has come upon us!
Then came the orcs, hateful and merciless
Slaying the king, enslaving the father,
Leaving thirteen of us alive.
What has become of the line of Durin!
Where were the six Dwarf Lords
Who swore loyalty under the seven rings?
My people, my kin!
O Thrain the wise, what should I do?
Awakened to the senses, I was
Free of the trance that ever plagued my young days
The forge was hot, it ever shone bright
Meat and ale, laughter ever rang in the halls
Long live Thror, King Under the Mountain!
But delved too deep into the Earth, we did
The Arkenstone, clear as the heavens
Drove the king mad with greed
Was it not enough, O grandfather?
And lo, the dragon has come upon us!
Then came the orcs, hateful and merciless
Slaying the king, enslaving the father,
Leaving thirteen of us alive.
What has become of the line of Durin!
Where were the six Dwarf Lords
Who swore loyalty under the seven rings?
My people, my kin!
O Thrain the wise, what should I do?
Awakened to the senses, I was
Free of the trance that ever plagued my young days
For we shall return to our home.
The ringing of the hammer
Echo through stone halls once more
The Dale will shine
Gold stream down the rivers!
Far over the Misty Mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day
To win our harps and gold from him!
