Four Lines, One Story
By David Taehee Lee
1. Existence
Life is long yet short
Life is beautiful yet bitter
Life is a blessing yet a curse
O Almighty Lord, what purpose do we serve?
2. God
He created Eden and Adam and Eve
He created the forbidden fruit, which to Eve the snake offered
He created not only good but evil
Is this nothing but a cruel play to you, Father?
3. The will to live
Long have I lived in the shades
My old age forfeiting me to enter Hades
But no, crumple shall I not
Before the soul dies and the body to the void flees!
4. Love
Many arsenals people have
Cruel judges of fate are they
But lo, the double-edged sword
Will strike them down one day!
5. Time
Great kings and lords
All but ruins and bones
Ever-eternal mountain and ocean
Carve up the corpses, dried and torn
6. The Cult
A man seduced a beautiful girl,
Pretending the fire pit leads to God's blessed world.
Burning the girl, listening to her cry,
The cult laughs, to the darkness they go to die.
7. Cloudburst
The sky dark and murky, hopeless
I am too terrified to speak.
Yet deep, deep down, the hope
That it all disperse one fine day.
8. The Dance
“Miss Charlotte, can you dance with me tonight?”
She does not reply to the shy request.
Starts to dance by herself under the light,
He’s in love, but love’s but pain if he’s rejected?
9. Time 2
How naive and cute those sweet children are,
Rolling in the mud as if it’s the world.
When I was young I was a careless liar,
But I’m now old, and it's time we can’t remold
10. The Night
Bartender, can you pour a cup of wine?
It’s been a long year since she broke my heart.
Yet you I have to make me fine,
So, girl, I hope you’re here to stay the night.
